I’m trying to make Patreon my new 9-5 💪🏽😤
It’s pretty ambitious, I admit, but I’ve been wanting to hold myself accountable when it comes to uploading my comics, art, videos, and fanfictions. And with a paying community keeping tabs on me, I find myself excited for the opportunity.
I’ve had Patreon in the past but it was more obligatory since Webtoon prefers to pay you that way when you upload comics on CANVAS. I didn’t think I could do something that would actually pay the bills. I’ve seen other people’s Patreons and even just getting 100 paid members feels like climbing a mountain. Plus, who would even be interested enough in my content to want to pay me?
Then one day, it kind of happened.
When I was working on Bittersweet Nightshade, I had the pleasant surprise of having someone sign up for my patreon and even giving me and my friend Sarah, co-author of BN, money. It was such a high honor and felt like such an impossible milestone. However, uploading BN became difficult with real life interfering and I found myself stopping the story, both to Sarah and the patron’s disappointment. They left and I understood. I felt like such a failure and promptly abandoned Patreon again.
Also if you’re reading or listening Sarah, I owe you 2 bucks for the BN patron thing. So be on the lookout for that.
So after that experience, I wasn’t keen on trying to sell myself to people again. I also suck at selling period, how I have my own current job, I’ll never know, but I had settled and life seemed the way it was.
UNTIL…
CaezHel.
She is a youtuber that I accidentally stumbled upon who had a webtoon called Lucky she was passionate about but could never seem to catch WEBTOON’s attention and after not being able to pay the bills and work on her comic regularly, like me, she had to decide what would benefit her, especially since she had a child to take care of.
And so she created a new comic, Haunting Dagger, that got people’s attention and she made a proposal to her fans: help her reach her patreon goal and she would deliver a certain number of comic pages weekly. And it worked! She was able to churn out the agreed pages and the people grew, and the comics churned out grew even more until she’s at where she’s at now. Making comics a full-time job! In less than 6 months she was able to do what she loved and after 2 years, here she is still! It struck me as incredible, just seeing a community band together to support someone so much simply because they loved the story. Also, it probably helped that she was adding the NSFW elements to it which I’m all for. I’m an adult, I know what I like and I’m obsessed over how shiny her art is. Besides how immaculate it is, vibrant, colorful, and shiny art is my favorite kind, and used to be one of my signature art styles back in the day.
Haunting Dagger
Characters Dagger and Dakota, a werewolf and a haunted cheerleader. A M/W NSFW comic found only in CaezHel’s Patreon.
All in all, I’m just blown away with the potential Patreon has since CaezHel is not the first creator I know who got to make a livable wage. Lexetart, a controversial figure in some circles, is another creator who made it big with her comic, Jeff’s Disorder. It might also be why she started getting crazy hate later. I’ll talk about that some other time.
And so I had to stop and think that maybe I should give Patreon another shot.
What’s the harm right?
So here I am, trying to be more consistent with it. Which seems to be working so for. I plan to give first access to all of my patrons, especially projects still up in the air and not officially published. Like the 2025 Webtoon Contest, I’m going to post the links to view my horror thriller comic The Barringer Hotel there until its official submission in March. I would post the actual pages there, but Patreon sucks at the vertical format and I don’t want to ruin the integrity of my work. So I’ll post it here on my website but have the page private for paid members. Sorry free fans. I don’t plan to lock it forever, just after a few weeks and then I’ll release it to the public.
HOWEVER, for the NSFW content or extended scenes, that will definitely be locked exclusively for the paid members. This is simply because I don’t feel comfortable just throwing out sexy spicy images where just anyone can see, like my brothers for example, or worse, my parents and extended family.
I can just see my mother shaking her head and asking me if this is what my talent at drawing amounted to. At least if it pays my rent, she can’t say boo. 😅
But, we’ll see where a year’s time lands me. Mark it people, I am determined to make this succeed.
Until next time everyone,
Cheers! ✨
